ZOODOCHOU PIGHIS

Ag.Sotiros Ag.Irini

A few kilometres north of batsi is the monastery Zoodochou Pighi. Zoodochou Pighi meaning the source of life, or Monastery Aghia, deviring it's name from the Holy virgin as the life giving fountain which restores good health to mind and body. It has been said that Zoodochou Pighi was first a school and then became a monastery. It is certain, however, that by the 14th century it was a monastery. The monastery was wealthy and during the war of independence gave considerably financial help to the Greek forces. In 1927 the monastery closed and re-opened again in 1928 as a nunnery, at which time many architectural alternations were made.
